You Hold the Universe in Your Heart
In January I learned of the loss of one of my former students. I had taught her in 6th and 8th grade and she was a 9th grader this year. This loss had a large impact on me, and my drive to help all my current and future students see that there will always be a way out, a way to a better time. I created the piece “You Hold the Universe in Your Heart” as a way to process through my grief and share this idea with others. The day before I learned the news, I had been completing a meditation with some fellow teachers to prepare us for the first day back in the new semester. In the meditation we were told to envision that we held the whole universe in our hearts. This line was my original spark for the piece. My ideas was to show an anatomically correct heart, cut out, showing through to the universe within. My first iteration of this price is fairly small, living in my sketchbook. But I am hoping to create a larger painting of the concept, using oil paints and thicker mediums with layering to recreate the effect.
A message I wish for all my viewers to thing when look at this work it that though you may be going through rough moments in your life, our hearts, and minds, are capable of holding so many millions of things in them. I hope that everyone can look into themselves and find their own strengths to be able to continue on. Mental health is so important and I'm thankful I'm living in a time where it is more openly discussed.
